“Bollards of all sorts of shapes and sizes are generously provided by the local town councils. To enhance everyone’s entertainment, they are usually cleverly positioned in carefully chosen, inaccessible locations. Sometimes the council also provides a person outfitted in a crisp uniform exuding an aura of importance. The uniform has a nautical theme and is suggestive of nautical knowledge and competence. These assumptions are all wrong, as more often than not the helpers lack any nautical skills. They regularly secure the mooring rope incorrectly, leaving the boat to slowly but irreversibly collide with neighbouring yachts. Alerted by the noise, “all hands” appear on the deck, desperately squeezing fenders between the hull of their beloved craft and the newcomer.”
